Our Accomplishments

A creator and administrator of innovative financial products, the Chantier Trust contributes to the development of social economy enterprises.

First patient capital product for social economy enterprises

The Chantier Trust manages an investment fund that was the first in Québec to offer patient capital for social economy enterprises (excluding community housing).
A main feature of this product is the fact that no guarantee is required for operations investments and a subordinate guarantee is asked only in the case of real estate investments.

Objective

The implementation of these financial products is made possible thanks to contributions from investment partners and non-reimbursable financial support from the government of Canada.

Returns are offered to private investors on the basis of management of portfolio risk.

Today, this financial product model has new targets through the creation of specialized funds that it implements.

Investment targets were reached both in terms of allocated investment and in terms of geographic distribution throughout the province of Québec

Specialize Funds

Tailor-Made Financial Tools

Over recent years, initiatives from the Chantier Trust and requests from actors in the field led to the creation of specialized funds (associated and managed) to respond to needs for development in different sectors of the social economy. These funds exclusively unite private investors and partners from Québec’s social finance ecosystem.

These financial products offer terms that vary from 2 to 15 years based on the specific needs of collective enterprises, and investor returns are fixed according to the market as regards the type of investment. Decisions are made under the governance of committees made up of representatives from investment partners.

These autonomous funds are founded under the form of limited partnerships, with the general partner being the Gestion Fiducie du Chantier de l’économie sociale. Operations are delegated to the Chantier Trust and the Réseau d’investissement social du Québec.

The Chantier de l’économie sociale Trust was an early partner in the development of this new fund for community organizations. In collaboration with Centraide du Grand Montréal and the Coalition montréalaise des tables de quartier, the Initiative Immobilière Communautaire du Grand Montréal was born.

In addition to these financial partners, over a dozen partners from different sectors took part in the reflections which led to identifying solutions to best support community organizations.

Accomplishments that drive our ability to innovate

The Chantier de l’économie sociale Trust has proven its model’s viability. In recent years, private investors are increasingly interested in investment vehicles that show strong social impacts.

The Chantier Trust seeks to propose new investment opportunities, notably through the development of new, niche funds, thereby offering innovative solutions to social and environmental issues in Québec.
